Mental illness is a passion of mine and an interesting topic. Before working in this type of field, you could say that I too was ill-informed on the subject. Working with people who have mental illness gives an outsider a better understanding of their conditions. This illness can affect the way a person thinks, feel and relate to others.
My thoughts on mental illness is the system is broken. It's an area that has not caught much attention until recent years. People who are diagnose with mental problems are under-treated and over stigmatized. Mental illness is not researched like other fields. Our government should take the matter more seriously in prevention and treatment of mental health.
I can remember as a child, experiencing mental illness in my family. It was something that no one wanted to talk about. At the time I had no knowledge of their condition. The only thing that I could remember is my family saying that they have to pray for this person, which is something that black people would do when dealing with mental illness. I can not remember if my family member ever received any type of treatment. I was aware of how my family treated the person. They were shunned and isolated from family functions. This type of treatment happens a lot to people who suffers from mental illness.
As mentioned before, our mental health care system needs improvement. The system needs improvement on early prevention and treatment. Therapist need to be culturally competent in assisting different cultures with diagnoses and treatment. There should be more available resources, so people can get the help they need. Insurance companies should pay for treatment of an individual who is seeking care. As a community there should be more open dialogues on mental illness and the availability of treatment.

I also believe that the mental-ill system is broken. This population is normally overlooked and just labeled as "crazy". This is a serious matter because not only does mental illness effect the way people think, it also impacts their life. Good job on expressing your opinion.
ReplyDeleteThe system and society in general dismisses people with mental problems as crazy, dumb, stupid, or unmotivated. This needs to change since their are many people on the spectrum that need help that may become depressed and suicidal because of the way people view them. These individuals need more than prayer.
ReplyDeleteIndividuals with mental issues should not be frowned upon. They need more help
